In the first episode, we learned about Charles’ sinister world, but the second chapter gives a slice of how he slowly manipulated people in his life to follow him, including the woman who loves him — Marie-Andrée. One of the best crime shows I've watched in the last few years and despite what is a very disturbing set of events - the colourful visuals will leave you wanting to go to South East Asia. By this point, it’s obvious what Sobhraj is capable of: how to bring him to justice without further endangering the lives of his young French associates, who are gradually realising what a monster is in their midst? At least "Belgian guy" keeps to a generic British accent, that is far less grating. The co-producer of the series Paul Tester told a media outlet that it was a challenge to tell a true story and that there was a long development period of the series. This is a very energetic, fast paced drama. I've got other things to do today you know. For privileged white travellers, the availability of chemical or sensual pleasures is the draw; but the script illuminates how that permissiveness also left some of them feeling unmoored and unsure, the perfect prey for a suave predator like Sobhraj. Yes it comes together but I can't help but feel it could have been made so much better if it hadn't have been made this way...I sort of almost gave up at ep 3 ..but stuck with it. That comes across as retro, but not in a good way – unlike Dominik Scherrer’s marvellous score, a riot of analogue synths and percussion drawing on exploitation movie soundtracks of yore to intoxicating effect, and adding just a hint of illicit viewing pleasure to spice up the schedules. What follows is a vividly mounted, if somewhat partial, fact-based narrative, attempting to uncover the truth of Sobhraj’s nefarious exploits, while drawing a portrait of the seductive persona and skewed psychology behind the carnage. Jenna Coleman as Marie-Andrée Leclerc and Tahar Rahim as Charles Sobhraj in The … As some others have mentioned it's a really good show, but is let down by the constant jumping between times. Review The Serpent, episode 1 review: a promising thriller that slowly casts its spell 3/5 Great styling and an intriguing narrative, but there's a strange charisma bypass at the centre of this tale And while we register Sobhraj’s scorn for the Euro-trash tourist class, the drama itself essentially reduces the Thai characters, for instance, to minor roles as dodgy cops, bar girls and embassy flunkies. The show is rife with over-acting amongst nearly every actor. All rights reserved. With numerous dead bodies, a string of prison escapes, plus decades of charismatic manipulation, fake passports and a playboy lifestyle jet-setting across south-east Asia, it’s no wonder Sobhraj has already inspired two books, an Australian miniseries, a Bollywood feature and sundry television documentaries. With the assorted revellers too out of it to spot what’s going on, and the local police apparently unwilling to bother investigating, ‘Alain’ has a lawless environment in which he can operate with impunity. The twisting, real-life story of Charles Sobhraj, a murderer, thief and seductive master of disguise, who was a hidden darkness in the mid-70's on Asia's hippie trail. Metacritic Reviews. The show focuses on Charles Sobhraj’s crimes and arrest in 1976 which was led by a Dutch … “The question is whether I have committed murder,” he muses – actor Tahar Rahim keeping a serene poker face: “The courts they have decided, no,” is his somewhat evasive assessment. Why didn't they just cast someone who actually speaks the language?! Interviewed by a US TV reporter in Paris in 1997, Charles Sobhraj, a French national of Vietnamese and Indian extraction, is questioned about his criminal past. I truly don't understand that in the year 2021, you would not cast a Dutch actor to play the dutch part (Michiel Huisman for instance) or a Belgian actor to play the belgian part, etc etc. The Serpent Review: A Compelling Mystery! Why cast 4 Brits to play a Dutch, a Belgian, a German and a Quebecois? Netflix’s new series The Serpent is based on the true story of serial killer Charles Sobhraj. I'm not a professional you know. It's very disturbing and awfully well made, and the actors are great - but all the backwards-and-forwards time shifting was really really irritating! 'The Serpent': TV Review. The guy playing Knippenberg has to use a horrible fake Dutch accent all the time, not to mention the few actual lines in Dutch, that he just butchers. Very original story & plot , great acting , very refreshing unusual settings in South East Asia. Tahar Rahim embodies the sinister criminal behind the seductive mask with considerable aplomb, taking advantage of more permissive times to wreak havoc among its more gullible denizens. This eight-hour true-crime drama opens with what nowadays might be termed a non-denial denial. This feeling was magnified by the fact we are currently in lockdown. The twisting, real-life story of a murderer, thief and seductive master of disguise. My biggest problem: the cast! Looks good but do not let Billy Howle speak Dutch. The constant jumping back and forth of the timeline is irritating until you get used to it. FAQ I wish I hadn't started now. Best thing I've watched for ages - watched all 8 over 2 days - couldn't believe what was happening - It was open mouth time ! This is a biography of the French serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who operated during the 60s and 70s on the Asian hippie trail, namely Bangkok, and the chasing of him by an idealistic young Dutch embassy attaché, amidst complete apathy, acceptance or downright corruption of all authorities, and against the express wishes of his vile, racist ambassador: the murdered victims were only "beatniks" and "scum". User Ratings Maybe it'll calm down as the series progresses. This recap of the BBC and Netflix series The Serpent episode 2 contains spoilers. A refreshing change to see a work of such high quality from BBC these days! 17/01/2021 BBC. 4:48 PM PDT 4/1/2021 by Daniel Fienberg FACEBOOK; TWITTER; EMAIL ME; Netflix . A chronological timeline wouldn't have been as engaging. The drama is already out in the UK on the BBC, but it will be released on Netflix on April 2, 2021. I personally found that watching it as a "box set" seemed to lessen that feeling. … Phenomenal costume and set design, and a great score. I like Jenna Coleman, but I think she's just not a great fit here. I just happened on it, and immediately realised this was going to be a lot nastier story than I usually like, but I haven't been able to turn it off and I've also watched the second episode and found it even better. It is based on the crimes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who murdered young tourists between 1975–1976. I like the look of this, I have no problems with the back and forth timeline. Good series but get Dutch actors for Dutch speaking characters! A great, harrowing story, poorly told. The Serpent is the best BBC drama series in ages — god knows how it slipped through the net — but I still think it most unlikely that I shall stick it through to the final episode. Well made but it's just A phenomenal account of a seriously dangerous and manipulative man and those closest to his actions. Heightening the tension, the writers nimbly skips back and forth in time between Sobhraj’s increasingly heinous acts and Knippenberg’s subsequent attempts to piece events together – amusingly turning the flip-over lettering of old-school airport arrival boards into a handy calendar – while the early episodes heighten tension by retracing events in Bangkok from multiple perspectives. | Registered charity 287780, Answering questions from the screen sectors, The Serpent is a heady 1970s-set portrait of a globetrotting playboy killer. What an entertaining mini-series!! The Serpent, BBC One review ★★★★★ By Euan Franklin on 28/12/2020 4 CW readers are interested Ellie Bamber and Billy Howle in The Serpent, BBC One (Photo: BBC) Good start to the show but I just do not understand why they would have a person playing a Dutchman (Billy Howle - Herman Knippenberg) that obviously does not understand or speak Dutch. It's an intriguing show. Superb acting from the leads. I don't understand why the actual Dutch actors didn't comment on this? The Serpent. After that teasing 1997-dated opener, they throw the viewer right into the middle of the story: we’re in the heady milieu of 1975 Bangkok, realised by directors Tom Shankland and Hans Herbots with self-consciously exotic, retro-inflected visuals, as if they were channelling the louche, woozy travelogue sections of Just Jaeckin’s Emmanuelle (1974), before the simulated couplings kicked in. Highly recommend. | This is not a 10* show by any stretch of the imagination, so don't believe the stooges. Binged it one day- just an Awesome show to start 2021, Entertaining except for the annoying accents and flawed dialogue, Entertaining watch- not perfect but close enough for me. The Serpent, BBC One review - tracking down the hippie-trail murderer The Serpent, BBC One review - tracking down the hippie-trail murderer Charming psychopath Charles Sobhraj's motives remain elusive in real life and on-screen by Markie Robson-Scott Saturday, 02 January 2021 News, reviews and archive features every Friday, and information about our latest magazine once a month. The series stars Tahar Rahim in the lead role as Sobhraj. Some reviews have pointed out the frequent timeline jumping. It's one of those dramas that you need to concentrate hard on, as it is a little deep, and could be seen as confusing. With Tahar Rahim and Jenna Coleman. The writers create an alluring antihero, allowing us to understand his grievances as an ethnic and social outsider; but compared with, say, the crimes of the terrorist master at the heart of Olivier Assayas’s similarly globe-trotting Carlos (2010), Sobhraj’s murders are much more clearly the product of a warped psyche, driven less by ideology than by a pitiless egotism that may yet prove his undoing. A hidden darkness on Asia's hippie trail. I wasn't too bothered by those constant time jumps while those seemed to have annoyed quite a lot of people. Meanwhile, the killer’s besotted partner Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman, suitably remote behind massive 70s shades) struggles with her conscience, repelled by what’s going on yet seemingly trapped by his commanding personality. A change of plans could shake up everything . But those accents...Jenna Coleman speaking french especially. A must watch (unless your kids are off backpacking round the world!!) The first episode looks good though and I am looking forward to the rest of the season. The Serpent, review: Sexed-up serial killer drama is glacially slow … A particularly good cast, once again I'm impressed with Jenna Coleman. You quickly realise everybody is in on everything that's going on there, and the whole situation is rotten to the core. How long does my review have to be ? So engaging-I felt the desperation of Dominique, the frustration of Herman, the evil of Charles and pure creepiness of Ajay. Rahim, who built his career from Jacques Audiard’s The Prophet (2007) onwards playing resilient naïfs, here slips into a very different register, gliding along on supreme self-confidence: Sobhraj – at this point pretending to be a gems dealer called Alain – presents as a charismatic alpha male lording it over a seemingly unending pool party, his not-quite-convincing flowing locks only contributing to the sinister sense of a man living behind a façade. This was fantastic. For this BBC/Netflix offering, the writer Richard Warlow – who scripted the series with Toby Finlay, one of the writers on Warlow’s Victorian crime saga Ripper Street (2012-16) – credits Richard Neville and Julie Clarke’s nonfiction study Bad Blood (1980) as a source. Ripper Street had Matthew Macfadyen’s upright police officer fighting to maintain order in a morass of iniquity; here, the unlikely upholder of moral values is Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle), a low-level functionary at the Dutch embassy, who discovers that recently found charred human remains are a missing young Dutch couple and decides to circumvent the Thai police’s indolence by investigating on his own. Completely transported me to another time and place. The series is suspenseful, but what really irritated the hell out of me is van Knippenberg's accent when he speaks Dutch, there would've been several really good Dutch actors that could've pkayed his part. I don't mean to say it's bad, because it isn't; I simply do not understand why the editor was allowed to cut it up so savagely. I found this a great watch, the tooing and froing of the time line demands your attention, and in turn pulls you deeper into the story. The first time the film is more interesting than the book, read many years ago. He shelters these lost boys and girls, surreptitiously poisons them, disposes of the bodies, then uses their passports to facilitate his own business dealings – all possible in the days when stuck-on ID photos could easily be switched. It's still saying it's too short. A big let down for my concern. This is a must watch series, cannot fault it! I'm french myself so this really annoyed me.
